There is a Heisman Trophy in my family.

I think I’ve know that for years, but the fact is, football never really interested me very much before MysteryMan came into my life.
Professional football still does not interest me one bit.
College football only because whether or not his team wins often determines MysteryMan’s mood. (And okay, on that note, don’t anyone mention the words Appalacian State around him. Don’t even think them actually.) Plus it means that sometimes when a game is on I get to go to the bar and drink beer and play photo hunt.
Now munchkin football, well, that I love. Not only because MysteryMan is head coach of the munchkin team… okay, and those 7th & 8th graders are mostly bigger than me… but because they’re young and awkward, and sometimes they do really amazing things. If a professional football player does those things, I think, wtf man? You’re getting paid millions of dollars to that every time. But when the kids do it? Now that’s worth watching.
Anyway, yesterday when we were celebrating Labor Day with breakfast beer and some friends, (MysteryMan has been a wonderful influence on my drinking habits) my Mother calls and tells me that Uncle Kaz is giving his Heisman Trophy to his high school football team.
Uncle Kaz (Dick Kazmaier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_kazmaier ) is married to my grandmothers youngest sister. He played for Princeton, won the Heisman in 1951, and was drafted to the Chicago Bears in 1952. But, and this is the really badass part, he decided not to go on an play professional football, but to go to Harvard Business School instead.
How many people face a choice like that in their lives… Professional football career or Harvard Business School?
The only dissapointing thing is that I don’t have a drop of this man’s blood running through my veins. Regardless, it is kind of cool to be related to someone who was on the cover of Time magazine:

Recycling Cabinet
DIY Wine Rack

That IS cool. But I think it is even cooler that Mystery Man coaches Munchkin ball.
Oh, and go Steelers! LOL
Well, I’m impressed by your Heisman connection. And Mystery Man is a Michigan man…Go Buckeyes!
seriously cool, just as i have come to expect of your family bloodlines. and i love me some college ball. it is the best game out there. going tailgating this weekend. go ags!
Neat.
I guess when you don’t bother to dust it off anymore, the trophy is better off in someone else’s case.
