DIY Challenge - Wine Rack
Feb 21st, 2008 by kitliz
Despite the fact that my body and I have been fighting a losing a battle with mucus this week(nice visual, I know), the recycling cabinet actually got some legs yesterday. I hope to finish off the frame later today… like, sometime after I can breathe through my left nostril again and the pain in my ears is reduced to a dull throb.
Ugh.
In the meantime though, Charles & Hudson linked to this DIY project over at Our House today.
Which you can build yourself for around $120.
My first reaction was kind of, Um, really? $120? I mean, it’s a pretty cool piece, and it does hold 144 bottles of wine. And really, even the cheapest wine racks you can buy will only hold 60-90 bottles of wine for that price. So for $120, it really is a good deal.
Its main components are also 4 pieces of maple and this type of mesh:
Which I’m all for the metal and wood mixture, but it just doesn’t seem like it should cost $120, does it?
So, I’m proposing a DIY challenge. You can join in if you want, or just watch me run with it… but I’m going to try and build something similar (okay, it may have a little more creative spin) that can hold proportionally the same amount of wine, for less than $120. Using comparable materials of course. And I think, in my case I’m going to try for one that holds 72 bottles for under $60, because wine doesn’t sit in my house long enough for me to collect 144 bottles, that’s for sure.
This DIY Challenge begins March 1st. Be sure to let me know if you want in so I can link to your progress!

DIY Wine Rack

Sounds like fun, but we have no need for a wine rack… so I won’t be playing along. Can’t wait to see what other people come up with though!
There you go with those mitered corners again…lol
72 bottles of wine????
Good grief!
I do need a decent wine rack though. Maybe I’ll make one for $20 that holds 10 bottles of wine…my yearly quota, dontchaknow….lol
i will open a bottle, or two, and watch you play this one out.
