Only Likes Running When Being Chased

Last week I walked between 10-12 miles… and I loved it. I did not run even one of those miles, and it occurs to me as I write this that unlike some people I do not like running. Or, more accurately, I do not get excited about running. I get excited about riding my bike, hiking in the woods, getting the crap kicked out of me in a sparring session… but unless I’m working through some perplexing mental problem or being chased by a psycopath, frankly, I find running to be a little boring.

The only reason I continue to do it now that I’m no longer training for TKD competitions and need the conditioning is because I realize there is a chance (albeit minute) that one day someone will actually be chasing me and my existance may depend on whether or not for the last 5 years of my life I actually got off my lazy but and ran a few miles a couple of times a week. No shit. That is my motivation. Hey, whatever works.

(Incidently, that was also my reason for taking up martial arts in the first place, and is currently my reason for owning firearms. I do not  ever want to find myself in a situation for which I am… ill-equipped. )

A Sampling of Our Menu

Okay, it’s just my menu. Anytime MysteryMan sees me spooning out portion-correct servings of food for myself his eyeballs roll all the way back into his head and dissappear. And this from a man who goes entire days without eating!  (Okay, in the interest of fairness he may also be rolling his eyes at the fact that on the way to the refridgerator I tripped over a cat missed the fridge and banged my elbow into the counter-top… not that I’m clumsy or anything. )

Anyway, since talking is getting boring, this week I thought I’d share with you some staples in my diet.

1 c. Mac & Cheese
1cup mac-and-cheese (300 cal)
Approx Calories: 300
Ingredients: Um… Mac. And, cheese.

Mini Veggie Sandwiches
Mini Veggie Sand (130 cal)
Approx Calories: 130
Ingredients: 3 Saltine crackers, full-fat mayo, mustard, 1 slice provalone cheese, lettuce, tomato

1 c. Buttered Noodles
1cup Buttered noodles (210)
Approx Calories: 210
Ingredients: Noodles, butter, salt. Mmmm.

Mini Caprese Salad on French Bread
Mini caprese (150 cal)
Approx Calories: 150
Ingredients: 2 French bread slices, tomato, fresh buffalo mozzerella, a drizzel of both olive oil and balsamic vinegar, basil.

1 c. Chili w/ Cheese
1cup chili w cheese (350 cal)
Approx Calories: 350
Ingredients: Everything in my Whatever-you’ve-got-in-the-fridge Chili recipe, cheese, and some shakes of Red Hot.

Math Ain’t My Thing

I would guess that right now I eat about 4 times a day. Typically it looks something like this:

9ish – 1 c. Cheerios* w/ 2% Milk and a drizzel of honey (150 cal)
Noonish – Noodles of some sort or half a PB&J (200 cal)
3ish- Crackers and Cheese or whatever else is around (150 cal)
6ish- Maybe pasta or grilled cheese or a taco with a little guac (300-400 cal)

I don’t actually count the calories or do the math, but I’m guessing that I eat between 800-1000 calories a day (depending on the day) and that that has led to exactly 2 lbs of weight loss a week, which I am perfectly happy with.

The only reason I’m writing about this is because anything you read online will say DO NOT EAT LESS THAT 1200 CALORIES A DAY. In all caps. Basically. But the thing is, I’m not starving myself. I’m not hungry. And I’m not losing any more than the recommended number of pounds per week. I guess I’m just saying that weight loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. I think its just as much about listening to your actual body and seeing how it responds, as it is to whatever calorie-counting/ low-carbing/ waist-to-hip ratio/ portion sizes that we read about online or in weight loss books. Thus ends the Public Service Annoucement portion of our program today.

*Aside. We’ve been out of Cheerios for like 4 days, and yesterday after MysteryMan and I stopped at the store I was riding home with the bag of groceries on my lap, and I just happened to look down and see that happy yellow box, and thought “Hi Cheerios!” Except for I saw MysteryMan staring at me and then realized that I actually said that out loud.

one reason i like running, in my defense, is that it keeps me sane. good for me = good for the universe. there are more reasons (one being i can eat at stone cold…oh, wait, you prolly call it cold stone, at any given moment. like now….or now. or even……..now!) but i don’t want to be the annoying advertisement for running.

and i think you are absolutely right about the one size don’t fit all. you seem to be doing just fine. and i need some buffalo mozzerella pronto.

I LOVE fresh mozzerella. Cannot live without it.

And hey, I’ve got nothing against people that can (and love) to run! In fact, maybe if I could run more than 2 miles without collapsing into a pile of jelly I would like it more!

MMM…I had a fresh mozarella, basil and tomato sandwich for dinner tonight! MMMM!

I use to think I loved running, and then I got dogs. I’m big into walking now…
