Recipe for Disaster (but a pretty one)
Maybe you’re getting the impression that my life is extra-full at the moment, which is both true and wonderful, and is also the reason that I’m posting pictures that are two weeks behind. (Next post, we go even farther back in time.)
So, a couple of months ago something fun happened. My oldest and dearest friend whom I have known since the tender age of one-month (and is currently the proud owner of a pink-on-pink crookedbroom) met MysteryMan’s best friend whom he has known almost as long and… poof… cupid’s arrows struck home.
Don’t worry, that’s not the “disaster” part of this post.
Even though most of my life right now is consumed with work, the house on garrison, the memorial house, and the tenuious grip MysteryMan and I are keeping on our relationship, I was very reluctantly convinced that it was a good idea to drive four hours up north with them for a Saturday. To an island whos only modes of transportation are bikes and horses.
And it started out okay, actually, with a trip to the butterfly house.
MysteryMan convinced me that this was the place to sit if I wanted a butteryfly to land on me…
Which is ironic, because a butterfly did not land on me, but five minutes later…
Ah, well, he is the sweeter half of us.
I also have to say, starting off the afternoon with a mimosa? Not at all a bad deal.
And then… sigh… and then one of our party got the bright idea that it would be a good idea to tour the rest of the island by doing the infamous Mackinac Island Bar Crawl. Everything about this idea indicated that it was a bad one, like the fact that we were going to be drinking and riding bikes. (Though that is infinitely better than drinking and driving cars.) And normally, I wouldn’t advertise on my website the fact that “Hey, I gave in to copius amounts of peer pressure and decided it would be fun to pretend I was 21 again, which I clearly am not” except I had the Nikon with me, so this is probably the prettiest bar crawl ever captured on film, and I want to share it.
Plus they had an Irish Pub… and I’m a sucker for Irish Pubs… which is how we ended up here:
Clearly… clearly you can see here that this is not something I was thrilled about doing. As evidenced by my This-is-not-a-good-idea face.
Note that MysteryMan is stoic and unfazed, as usual.
Bar 5: (And I’m still manually focusing the camera, by the way.)
This is the part where I point out the personality differences in our group. MysteryMan and I being the calmer, more rational, less-likely-to-play-the-air-guitar-on-the-sidewalk couple. Our friends…
…not so much.
This man is still sober… how, is completely beyond reason.
After Bar 6, this one decided she was done walking. You can tell how far into the beyond she’s gone, because she’s a die hard Ohio State fan. Who is wearing a Michigan jacket. Willingly.
After Bar 7, MysteryMan and I got separated from the crazier portion of our party, and decided to walk the long hike up to Bar 8, which was actually very scenic.
My dad and step-mom got married here something like 13 years ago:
And finally…
Which wasn’t ALL the bars, but it’s as far as MysteryMan and I got, because we aren’t completely insane. And we also aren’t as young as we used to be.
The evening (and my ability to manually focus the camera) was mostly downhill from there… but it sure was pretty while it lasted.

What a cool pic of the butterfly on his back. Very cool. You should think about framing it. It would be really neat it you altered it in photoshop so that the everything except the butterfly is in black & white!
Great Blog:)

I grew up in MI and loved our fun visits to Mackinac Island. Being now almost 14 hours from that place I (lill tear formed in my eye) maybe miss that little island a bit. maybe. The bikes, the beers, the many people, it can be a lot of debauchery. But it is still a fun trip to take & I am glad you guys had fun. ~ It’s good to take a good break work for some fun./ In our craziness of kitchen reno. we stopped this weekend to go to our towns biggest drinking/eating fest of the yr. and had a few brews (maybe a few shots too) and relaxed for the first time in weeks. It was worth feeling a little behind the next morning. Great pics & Good luck with everything!

Great story & terrific photos! LOL when I came across your male friend posing with ‘her’ bag. My ol’ liver would have made for very blurry pics by bar 3, and a splendid fall off my bike.
