iTouch Giveaway! (Sponsored by DuPont and the mySurface App)

DIY diva

Almost every time I post about DIY resources I include at least one iPhone app, because having color swatches and a level in my pocket at all times? Awesome. If only my miter saw could fit in there, my life would be complete.

In any case, I suspect there are a whole lot of you who don’t feel the need to have Google attached to your body at all times, but would still like the convenience of a plumb bob and the music of your entire CD collection in one device that you can take with you anywhere.

And DuPont would like to make that dream come true.

At least once a week I find an offer in my inbox for promoting something on DIYdiva that makes me roll my eyes so far back into my head I nearly fall off my chair. (Life insurance companies, I’m looking at you.) Then there are companies like DuPont that go to the trouble and expense of developing an actual useful tool, and then reach out to people like me (hello, tool addict) and offer us the opportunity to do something really cool for our readers, who occasionally put up with us through rambling incoherent posts about such riveting topics as drywall! and caulking!

So I’m thrilled to give you the chance to win this iTouch, courtesy of DuPont.

The mySurface App

If you’re in the middle of a remodel, are thinking about a possible remodel, or have just finished a remodel (you know you’re going to be doing it again in a year anyway) you’re going to want to download the mySurface app immediately. Because if you’re anything like me, there’s a part of your brain that spends 24 hours a day dedicated solely to finding and cataloging materials that may be just right for your home.

This app has a ridiculous number of Corian and Zodiaq surface colors and textures, which you can browse by color. What I love about this, is that when I have an idea– usually while driving, out to dinner, or some similarly inconvenient time — I need to know right this minute if it will work. Dark wood with pale green tile? White-washed cabinets with neutral counters? Maroon wall with a creamy backsplash? And hey look! I can check it out, right there in my pocket!

Also I’m a sucker for galleries, so you know I love this feature:

This one is definitely a keeper for my virtual DIY toolbox.

Give me that iTouch, Please!

I would love to, so I’m giving you three ways to enter:

1.) Leave a comment. Not just any comment though, I want to know your idea for the best home or DIY related app that’s yet-to-be-invented. I’m still waiting for them to come up with one that will do my laundry, please, but until that happy day, I’d settle for a home-maintenance calendar app. You know, something that tells me when to clean my gutters, change my filters, have the flue checked, etc. (And provides How-To tips for all us DIYers of course). So that’s my idea, now I want yours. You can leave up to 5 comments, and each idea gives you a chance to win!

2.) Re-blog it. Those of you with blogs, post about the giveaway on your website and link back here, and it’ll get you 5 entries in the contest.

3.) Facebook it. My mom still doesn’t know what the word “blog” means, but she’s a champion facebooker, so this one’s for people like her. Add me as a friend and then click on the “Love it? Click here to share on…” link at the bottom of this post. You’ll see the facebook icon appear, and if you click on it, it will automatically post a link on your facebook page. That counts for 5 entries too!

The contest closes at 11:59 PM on Saturday, October 10th. Winner announced on Monday, October 12th.

Let the games begin.

EDIT: An unexpected side effect of this contest is that I opened my facebook page and saw pictures of my freakishly long second toe ALL OVER THE INTERNET. That’s seriously awesome guys. If you’d like to add the contest to your FB page without picture of my toes there is a right arrow under the thumbnail that shows up when you click the Facebook icon. You can use the right arrow to scroll through the current photos on my page until you find one suitable. Which can totally be my toes if you like, because seriously? I have no shame.

EDIT: CONTEST OVER. The Winner was announced HERE.

I’d love an application that allow me to take a picture of my unfinished room, and it would finish it for me. Ok, realistically, I’d like an app that would let me take a picture of anything and give me a color scheme that goes along with it. For example, I take a picture that has a dark colored piece of furniture sitting on light maple floors. Bam, it’ll give me a wall (and ceiling?) color that’ll look great.

An app that allows you to take a picture of a room and it automatically coordinates what the best colors to paint the walls would be based on the colors of the furniture, floor, other accessories in the room.

is it the saddest thing ever that i have never used an app?! i feel sad just thinking about it. but what i always find myself doing when DIYing is running t the computer to see if someone has put a how-to video of what i am doing at the time. so if it were on my phone, even better.

    off to facebook ya!

    count me for 5!

This is the best giveaway ever… an iPod Touch has been on my wishlist for months (hubby is the lucky iPhone owner). As for an app, I can’t say because my hubby is actually making one for home improvements, and I can’t spill the beans!! It will be really awesome though. :) I want an app to help me meal plan, that’s kind of home related, right? I hope that can count as an entry.

Off to blog about it and such.

    Facebooked and blogged about. :)

I would love love love an app that could create the item I’m picturing in my head and tell me the store to find it at. I can’t tell you how long I’ve been picturing the perfect lighting fixture/chandelier for my bedroom but I cannot find it anywhere! Seriously Home Depot, why have you not created something like this yet?! And I’d be perfectly fine walking around all day with something plugged into my head, generating all of my brillant home decor and remodeling ideas into a tangible object that I can actually find somewhere. They do me no good floating around in my head!

  • Kayduh

I would love an app that tells me what tools I will need to complete a project. Until that day, I will use the awesome employees of my local hardware store!

I need an app that would alert me when to plant my spring/summer garden! Hello Zone 7: plant your watermelons this weekend!
Maybe I wouldn’t have lost said watermelons to an early frost if I had gotten them in the ground sooner.

Since I don’t have an iPhone or iTouch, I don’t know what all the Applications that currently exist are, but something that would actually measure would be awesome! I wouldn’t ever need measuring tape!

  • Alyssa

I want an app to measure things also – a cool digital laser measure no less!

I have no qualms with freakishly long toes showing up in my facebook, but I think I’d just rather give you some app ideas:

    1. Something tied in to the GPS that will show me where the cool hardware and home decor stores are relative to where I am. Not just the big box stores but all the antique and used goods stores too.
    2. An app that will answer complicated DIY questions instantly so I can stop standing there in the wood aisle looking dumb – like, if I have an 8×10 room and I want to do wainscotting up 2/3 of the walls, and the room has two doorways and a window, what size should the panels be and how many sheets of MDF do I need and what size do I need to cut the sheets into?
    3. An app that will provide sources and a price comparison for any item I need. Oil rubbed bronze school house pendant? Here you go. Dremel for carving Halloween pumpkins? No problem.
    4. An app that can keep a running inventory of all the things we have in our garage (so my husband can stop buying 1/2 sheets of plywood because he mistakenly thinks we don’t have any left).

And that’s all I got. I’ll post about it on my blog too. Great giveway (I wouldn’t be half as interested if it was life insurance) ;)

  • John Englert

How about a garage-door opener (so you can dispense with that bulky remote)? Or an override for all your motion-detecting lights? Or an indicator that your (snail) mail has just been delivered?
If your second toe is longer than your big toe, you have a condition called Morton’s foot. It is linked to some interesting health issues.

  • Aimee

Another app idea that we aren’t using… an easy calculator for calculating sq feet and linear feet without actually having to know what the equations are for it. :)

  • David Knispel

I don’t have an IPod so I don’t know what apps are available, but just the ability to make a list as I’m working on a project would be great. My theory is that every DIY project requires 3 trips to the hardware store. ;)

  • Marta

i’m in awe of the app being promoted by this lovely giveaway. would like to see something dealing with varied light sources.

  • Rochester Painters

    So, who won?

  • 楊淑君

Thank you Darren, this is an excellent list. I’m new to all this but want to setup my first blog soon so I intend on printing this out and adding it to my boxfile.

  • cheap car gps

in car gps systems usually have a cd-rom and you would have to load that regions cd into your system. if it does not have a cd-rom then its cheap and it will not work.
