Fist, Meet Face (Or So The Universe Said)

by kitliz on November 23, 2009

I tried three separate opening lines for this post, but what I believe I’ve landed on is this:

I need a Xanax. Or Three.

Because really, why beat around the bush? My normal self-medicating usually consists of half a children’s asprin, so yeah… I think about three Xanax should set me straight right now.

(Let’s just say I had the type of day at work today that makes a person consider all of the many different ways they might commit suicide with a five-dollar stapler.)

Things That Don’t Suck

In an effort to distract myself from that happy fate, I’ve got a preview of something less-suck to share with you.

Every couple of weeks or so MysteryMan has a low-grade panic attack about how in the hell we are going to put this house addition on mostly by ourselves. Not to mention mostly on the weekends, with some strategically scheduled vacation time. Yeah, we know it’s insanity, okay?

Of course, I’m completely stoked about the idea which illustrates where most of the Crazy resides in our relationship.

In any case, to ease his fears a bit, and also to help us better organize and plan… I intended to spend the winter months putting together documents and binders of information about how to do… well, all the shit you need to do to build a house.

And then I remembered, hey… I don’t suck at putting websites together. Which are much more portable, flexible, and frankly, a hell of a lot more interesting than binders.

So here’s a sneak-peek of what I traded in time with my power tools this weekend to tackle:

DIYdiva House Wiki

While I believe a blog– whatever the topic– is, at its heart, storytelling, a wiki is all about storing and sharing information. So it’s not pretty or particularly funny, and it’s certainly early-days as far as content goes, but it’s also a good example of how the web provides some solutions that make our big DIY projects a lot easier.

If you want to browse around the wiki, feel free. A good deal of that content will be specific to our build, but I’ve also begun amassing general construction information from across the web, and would love thoughts, tips, tricks, and lessons-learned from all my fellow housebloggers as well.

For a taste of some of the general content you might find there, check out the framing page. (Which, incidentally, was twice as long earlier this evening, after 2 hours of collecting information and resources, which disappeared into the great black hole of the internet when I tried to save the page. Hey! Universe! You want to take another shot at me today?!)

I have plenty more to say about the wiki in general, but since it’s after 1AM, I have almost nothing to show for my work this evening, and I’m losing my ability to construct coherent sentences…

Here’s to dreams filled with endless supplies of lumber and the smell of fresh sawdust!

Valerian Root! All in the universe is restored once again. If that doesn’t take the edge off then have a glass of wine or a beer. Lights out!
