While working on my basement hallway transformation I was presented with a problem…
Apparently I’ve gone from 20/20 vision to someone who considers this to be in focus. It’s either my eyesight or exhaustion. Or possibly I was drinking a beer when I took this. Either way, sorry for the fuzz.
The second problem was I either needed to tile this space, build shelves, or do something considerably faster and easier.
That’s what I’m talking about.
This little project cost $10 in fabric and $6 in curtain clips.
What I used:
- Approx 1-1/2 yards of fabric
- Iron-on hem
- Clip-on curtain
- An iron
- Scissors
- Eye hooks
- Various pliers and drill bits
What I did:
Step 1: Measure
I measured all sides of the triangle, and determined where the split in the curtain would be. I hear you can only measure two sides of the triangle and Pythagoras can help you out with the rest, but as I explained to my fifth grade math teacher, look… I can just measure it and get the answer. Duh. (And the engineer in the house just disowned me.)
Step 2: Cut & Hem
I cut the pieces 1″ longer than necessary on all sides and then used an iron-on hem tape to clean everything up.
Yeah, it’s that easy.
Step 3: Hardware
First I thought I was going to do something with this entire curtain ring, and then I realized since I wasn’t going to attach a rod, all I really needed was the clip.
I measured out the clip spacing using a handy piece of scrap tile as a marker. Because I’m a use-what-you-got kind of person, if that hasn’t been obvious so far.
I also found some small eye-hook-things that seemed like they would do the trick for attaching the clips to the stairs.
After some experimentation I found piercing the wood with the guide on one of my paddle bits was the perfect way to “pre-drill” the holes for these.
Then just a couple of hand twists, and…
Step 4: Attach
And that’s all she wrote. It was less than $20 and maybe 2 hours on a Friday night, half of which was digging around in my mess off spare parts for the right tools and hooks.
Makes me wonder why I didn’t do this 5 years ago.

You had me at ‘cut and hem’.
Thanks. this is what I planned to do with my stairs. Instead of buying fabric I am using old linen tablecloths for this project. Since they are white will add something to them. I also have to close the end since it is open. I purchased a tension rod for that end. Another old linen tablecloth will be used their also.

I am going to be ready for this. Luckily I have the main carrier beam running right there. So a very long cheap curtain rod and curtains tgat I already have. Working on my cheapie basement makeover.
