Black & Decker 24v Cordless String Trimmer/Edger Review (and Giveaway!)

Okay, let’s talk about weeds.

Here’s the thing about living in the city… you get weeds. Like two or three stray plants that pop up in the garden, maybe a lone dandelion in the middle of the yard, and weeding takes– on average– 5 minutes, twice a year. So to say I was unprepared for the veritable jungle of plants that will take root and fight viciously for their piece of ground out here in the country is, well, a slight understatement.

Not that it wouldn’t be possible to manage a garden, but (maybe I’ve mentioned this before) hello, I’m building a house over here. This is the first weekend all year I’ve had to devote to the yard. And in a stroke of brilliant timing, Black & Decker asked if I’d review their 24v Cordless String Trimmer/Edger, and asked me to see:

how it measures up in the toughest conditions you face in your lawn

The weeds around here are as tall as trees, and I thought, Black & Decker, you have no idea what you just got yourselves into. I was thinking the proper piece of equipment to use would be like, you know, a bulldozer? I wasn’t sure that a “string trimmer” was up to the job.

Let’s take a look at how it went…

Garage (er, house)

before_2

Whatever it is, this is where we live.

As you can see, the grass up by the house hadn’t been trimmed in, well, ever. I thought this was an easy way to break in my trimmer. Also, I’ve actually never used a string trimmer before, yard work isn’t exactly my area of expertise, so this was a good way to break me in too.

trial_1

That was pretty easy. It took all of 5 minutes, including the time I spent fiddling with the controls and adjusting the handle.

DSC_0767

Let’s step it up a notch, shall we?

Pasture

before_3

The 70 feet of fence I put up last year was looking slightly overgrown, and the donkeys were doing nothing to keep it down. We’re not talking about “a little overgrown grass” here. There’s a lot of clover, some large plants with a lot of prickers, some even larger plants with slightly fewer prickers, and dandelions that are the size of my torso.

This was the largest weed I chopped down by the pasture…

DSC_0751

Two feet tall, an inch-thick stem, and full of thorns.

This was where I figured the Black & Decker had met it’s match, but I turned on the “boost” mode, and as you can see, it went right through it.

Here’s a before and after in some of the “tamer” areas of the fence.

before_and_after

Not bad at all…

DSC_0756

The donkeys gave it two ears forward and two ears back. I think they were saving that clover for later…

DSC_0738

I was surprised that tackling 70 feet of fence took less than ten minutes, and I was starting to have a lot of fun so I scouted for the next place I would attack.

Garden Jungle

DSC_0758

Um, yeah. I’m a little behind on my weeding. But I flipped the trimmer to boost mode and went to town.

Leaving a path of weed-destruction in my wake.

The Black & Decker Cordless String Trimmer/Edger held up to every job I attempted, short of the time I held it up over my head to see if it could lift me up like a helicopter. Eh, every tool has it’s limits.

Review

DSC_0781

So I cleared a fairly extensive area with this baby in a relatively short amount of time. I was weed whacking for 30-45 minutes total.

  1. The weight was good. I want to have a little weight to my tools because it makes them easier to control and because I want to feel like it has some power behind it. This trimmer was lighter than I expected, but still felt good in my hands. And my arms didn’t get the slightest bit tired when using it.
  2. The power was clearly adequate. I used this on the biggest weeds I could find and it got right through them. Note: On two occasions after chopping through a particularly large weed the trimmer would stop and I’d think I’d maxed it out, or killed the battery. After clicking the trigger a couple of times it would start right back up – I’m still not sure if I was just losing my grip on the trigger or if I really did max it out.
  3. The string held up. I wasn’t sure about this whole “string” thing. I wanted something with a blade. And teeth. But I guess they know what they’re doing, as the string did it’s job just fine and held up to the beating I gave it running it right next to the metal fencing.

In short, I can’t find anything to complain about. Except, Black & Decker, I have a suggestion… maybe you could call it the “Weed Terminator” or “Jungle Destroyer” or something with a little more umph than “string trimmer”. You know, “Amazing Tool Of Landscaping Destruction” has a nice ring to it.

Here are some features I particularly liked:

My hand could reach the trigger and the safety switches at the same time. The only other tool I own that’s accomplished this is my drill. It’s the first thing  I look at in any tool.

DSC_0772

I also could flip to boost mode with my finger still on the trigger. Another plus.

DSC_0777

Also, it comes with the allen wrench needed to adjust the secondary handle. It’s a small thing, but do you know how effing irritating it is to have to go dig out the correct tool when you want to adjust something? Drives me nuts. So this feature got a smile out of me.

DSC_0778

All in all, it was a great product. I’d definitely buy one, or recommend it to anyone as a good value for the money.

Win Your Own

So here’s the deal… It’s Monday. I can’t do anything about that happy fact, but I can help you get excited for the weekend. Black & Decker gave me a second string trimmer to give away.

DSC_0782

Not this one, a clean one.

Here’s what you have to do to enter:

  1. Leave a comment. I’m not too picky about what you say, as long as you don’t bad-mouth my John Deere hat, but I’m interested it what your favorite and least favorite yard jobs are, if you want to share.
  2. Tweet this. (make sure you @kitliz so I know you tweeted)
  3. Facebook it. (make sure you’re my friend so I know you posted)

You can do all three, and enter 3 times.

Contest closes Monday, July 5th. Winner announced Tuesday, July 6th.

The winner will be randomly picked through random.org. Must ship to a U.S. based address (not that I don’t love you, Canadians) .

Legal Disclaimer: Black & Decker provided the product I reviewed, and the product I’m giving away. Which didn’t stop me from beating the hell out of the tool or telling you what I really think about it.

I would love a string edger/trimmer. My least favorite thing is edging the sidewalks. But I love, love, digging in the dirt.

  • patti

    momma WANT!

  • Mark

Least favorite yard job? Does all yard jobs count? No? Hmm, then I’d have to say trimming the bushes. We’ve got honeysuckle bushes and as it turns out I’m allergic to their pollen. I had vaguely suspected that I was allergic to it before I tried trimming the bushes, but knew it for sure afterwards.

I refuse to cut the grass or weed whack, but I do all the weeding of the flower beds and all the planting, so I think me and the man are even. I hate weeding by hand but there is no other way to do it. He would love to try this baby out for the grassy weeds, I’m sure!

PS – I work for Case, so I’m holding my tongue about the Deere hat. haha

  • meryl rose

OOOHH! I want THAT! Expecially considering a neighbor just wrote an anonymous note and mailed it to us that basically said “your house looks like a piece of shit and is making my property value go down and I’m trying to sell it. P.S. I won’t write my name for fear of retaliation.” What are we a bunch of hooligans who are gunna punch you in the face? And do you know we’re basically ripping down every room and starting from scratch inside? EUGH! Needless to say, I was very upset.

  • Katy

I will mow our grass, but I hate weed whacking. How long did the batteries last on this? Did you have to use two for the 30-45 minutes? That’s the drawback I’ve heard on the battery powered trimmers.

  • kitliz

Katy – Great question. The battery lasted right through the time I was out there. I wasn’t using it (trigger down) for a full hour… I mean, someone had to take all of those pictures! But I would say I got a good 45 minutes without seeing any sign of the battery being juiced out.

We had the battery plugged in for about 2 days waiting for the rain to clear before I used it.

Meryl – Seriously?! Well, I haven’t gotten any anonymous notes, but sometimes MysteryMan’s grandpa comes down and mows our lawn, which I take to mean the same thing. lol.

  • Susan

Would love to have the trimmer! My least favorite yard job would have to be emptying the bagger from the mower. I ask myself *constantly* why I insist on using it. I guess my loathing of sweeping up grass in the house is stronger than my dislike of emptying the bagger.
My favorite yard job is planting things. Love to play, I mean dig, in the dirt.

  • Crystal

Your blog always makes me want to get out there and do my own handi work. I love it!

I love the your tool reviews. It helps to have a heads up on products that I might be looking into.

  • Shane

My favorite “yard job” is pulling the grill and chair onto it and then drinking a good beer while watching meat cook.

My least favorite is anything that has to actually do with the yard itself.

  • Avrora Davidovna

We just moved into a house in a neighborhood overrun by short-eared rabbits. It’s the inner city, and I don’t know where they come frome. Anyway, I want to keep things nice and neat for them in my yard, and not scare them with any overly-loud tools, but at the same time the house has been vacant for about a year and the yard is a mess. This tool seems like a good way to get a start on cutting through the forest that is the back yard while still being respectful to the rabbits. Oh, and my favorite yard job is weeding right after it rained. It’s very satisfying to get an entire dandelion root with one little pull.

  • Kayduh

My least favorite lawn job is using my trimmer! The one I have is wicked heavy and the balance sucks (all the weight in one end). This one looks a lot easier to use!

  • Amber

This is the exact trimmer I was thinking of buying. Would be great to win it! I want to test it out on the weeds (which could be mistaken for small trees) over by my veg garden. Thanks for the giveaway and great review!

  • Greg Epps

Wow! That’s awesome. The one thing I hate about my current B&D trimmer is solved by this one: the power cord. I don’t have the million-and-a-half acre’s you’re dealing with, but dragging around 100 ft of extension cord makes my trimmer so heavy, no one else can help with the yard work. I’d love to add this to the arsenal!

  • kelly

I would like this… and my neighbors really would like it if I had and used one!

  • Ben A

I would love to win the trimmer! My favorite yard work would be mowing – just put on the iPod and zone out for some podcasts or music. My least favorite would have to be over seeding, which I have to do this year. All the raking to loosen the top layer of soil, gets mighty tiring!

  • Michelle

I would LOVE to have a cordless trimmer – if I didn’t have to drag a cord all over my yard, maybe I’d trim the weeds more often!

  • Mike

I suggest safety glasses for operating that thing. I usually am covered head to toe in grass and weeds when i get done trimming. My safety glasses usually resemble a car windshield on a bug filled day when I am done.

Also I am used to the large gas variety of these trimmers but would be interested to see how the battery versions compare.

And since I am in Canada I guess I miss out on this give away. I guess I need to start following some Canadian blogs for their give aways.

Maybe B&D could give me some tools to try out.

  • Yolanda

Please? I really don’t want to resort to gas trimmers, but the battery powered ones are so – well, wimpy.

  • denise

Oh yes, please pick me randomizer! I even have a Toledo connection to yardwork: we still use the 1970s-era reel mower that came from my grandparents’ house in Toledo. Needless to say pushing a mower over the ruts in the yard is not my most favorite chore, but at least I’m not spewing gas fumes all over the neighborhood.

  • kitliz

Denise – I totally have a reel mower, and I LOVE it. Not so helpful in the country, but at least you don’t smell like gas fumes after. It must be a toledo thing.

  • Greg Smith

I have the first generation with a lead acid battery. I would hope this one is lighter.

  • kelly@TearingUpHouses

    Oooh, I’d love to win!

    Kelly

  • Julie

Aw man, I soooo need this. Our push mower died, and since Hubs hit the road as an over the road truck driver, I’ve had to take care of our almost one acre yard by myself. The riding mower takes care of most of it, but there are a number of areas that have gotten so long that I fear that my kids will be eaten by lions soon.
Least favorite yard work….weeding the garden. Why can’t only the good stuff grow?!?

  • Julie

I just wrote about it on facebook….thanks for “friending” me so quick. I feel all special now. LOL

  • KatieD

Ohhhh, count me in! I actually enjoy most yard work. Anything that gets me outside and off my butt.

  • Braden

I don’t have a huge yard, and that’s part of the problem. So much edging around the garden, sidewalk, driveway, and trees. I’d love to with this trimmer, mine is old and gas powered. And heavy.

  • Joshua

Excellent review! I’ve always been a fan of B&D products, having visited their outlet stores on many occasions.

I like your hat – I think it’s awesome. Then again, I did grow up in Eastern Washington. :)

  • Mom Taxi Julie

That’s pretty awesome. I could really use a new weed whacker too. We bought one a few years ago and I’m not sure what happened to it but it needs to be “fixed”. Everytime I suggest we buy a new one I get the “I can fix it” but it never happens. AND I’m the one that does the yard usually!

  • Jennifer

Oh, a weed whacker… that would be heaven. I hate yard work so much that I’ve seriously considered just putting down gravel everywhere, or mulch… sigh.

  • Sharon

I just found out there’s perfume (no, seriously!) out there made by demeter, three of them, called grass, dirt, and tomato. Isn’t that awesome!?

  • Sharon

Fanned you on facebook and left a message on mine about your giveaway: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=608475456#!/?ref=home

  • Sara @ Russet Street Reno

I posted your giveaway on my ‘wall’…

  • runtymom

least favorite yard work is cutting back weeds the size of small trees along pasture fence that are growing in between fence and posts. this means hands/knees using fiskar cutting tool. i hate it. nothing against black and decker battery powered string weed whacker but hubby uses a stihl pro model w/ gas engine to tackle 5 acres of fence line and rest property. battery packs just don’t cut it with large areas to work on.
see if you can get stihl to let you demo their pro string trimmer model that you can put multiple attachments on the end. i’m waiting for hubby to buy the mini roto tiller end so i can resurrect the garden… we use the hedge trimming attachment on 750′ hedges. trims those beasts in less than 2 hours time!

  • Lee

I love gardening and most outdoor jobs. But I hate cleaning my gutters!

  • Wehaf

I like your review; few reviews give details of the handle and button positions, etc. Thanks!

I hate weeding but don’t mind raking leaves. :)

  • Dawn

Wow, great review! (and I’m not just saying that because I want to win… )

I’ve been looking at weed trimmers for awhile and was hoping to find something that was battery powered and worked well. This one seems to fit. If I don’t win this one, I think I may have to go buy one and try it out for myself. :)

  • Laurie

We have 10 acres and our current trimmer is too heavy for me to use. The one you are using looks like even I can use it!

  • Amber

My husband has bought the Garden Groom like two weeks ago and appears to be glad with that. We could not find it in any retailer and I think it was this http://hubpages.com/hub/Where-To-Buy-Garden-Groom-Midi-Collecting-Hedge-Trimmer article where he found a hyperlink to their official website and bought it directly via them – but online.

  • Lashunda Butscher

Your posts inspire me being the greatest I is usually. with thanks for the helpful information. I will definately be implementing this quickly.

  • julvon

thank you for your sharing.I found that to be more helpful well let me know how it turns out! I also like to have a string trimmer, but I don’t kown which kind of power is better for my garden.
http://www.julvon-gardentool.com/string-trimmer-c2.html ,I think it is nice!
