March Miscellany

This week has been devoted to working late at my day job and putting a couple of coats of poly on the closet floor. I was going the show you the stunning transformation, but it actually doesn’t show up well in pictures apparently.

Regardless, I’m totally in love with it, and I can’t wait to do the bedroom floor. We’ve got next weekend slated for that adventure, with a few vacation days the following week to finish it off.

That leaves the master bath as the big unfinished blight on the moving-in plans. I just tried to articulate the mental problems I’m trying to work through with the floor tile (for the shower and the rest of the bathroom floor) and I can’t put it into any sort of coherent thought. Suffice it to say I haven’t found just the thing yet.

The inside of the shower, and outside of the tub and fireplace will be done in this tumbled marble, which is a brownish-black when sealed. And looks awesome with the wall color in the bathroom.

If you can’t see the tiny tile sample in that picture, here’s a closer look.

Yeah, those don’t match and I don’t really want to talk about it. I haven’t decided if I’m sending the shower floor tile back yet. And don’t even get me started on a piece of marble or slate for the shower bench yet, because I don’t have the wherewithal at the moment.

  1. The closet floor is stunning! Too bad about the shower floor. Hope you find a good replacement.

Even with your kitchen still in boxes, I can tell those West Elm stools are perfect. It has the same feel as the bits and pieces of the house that you’ve already finished. Nice choice!

  2. Love the West Elm stools! I think those will go better with your kitchen than those wire mesh ones you liked in one of my inspiration pictures.

I like the marble wall tile but I don’t think you should keep the floor tile. The shape and color are both off. You could also consider granite or quartz for the shower bench. They would both be more resistant to etching or staining than the marble or slate. What are you using for the vanity tops? Bathroom designers often try to make those match.

  3. Just came across this bathroom with slate and Caesarstone in Mink:

Thought that might help with visualizing. I also wanted to add that another reason people match the vanity top and shower bench is that you need to purchase a whole slab of granite/quartz/natural stone unless you find a remnant. The cost of a few more cuts and install isn’t much more to add a matching shower bench. The big cost is of the slab itself.

  4. I like the stone for the shower floor. Makes me wish I used something like that on mine instead of 2X2 squares. I’m sure it will look great.
