You may remember that twelve weeks ago, we set a move-in date for March. Tomorrow is the last day of March, and yet the tub still resides in my bedroom and the master bath looks like this…
Which actually is not the biggest of my concerns at the moment. I was scheduled to take 5 days off between Wednesday and next Tuesday to get the final touches done on the bedroom, one of the bathrooms, and move all of our stuff in. All of which I could do if it wasn’t for two things 1.) my time off went from 5 days to 3 days to 0 days in the course of a week, and 2.) our doors on on back order.
In order to get a temporary certificate of occupancy (in Michigan) you need to have a working bathroom with a door, a bedroom, and a temporary kitchen.
We also decided to get the floor in the bedroom and finish all the trim off before “moving in” so that we don’t need to worry about moving everything out and then back in again at some later date. And speaking of the floor…
That’s the closet. Excuse me for a minute while I die from the awesomeness of that wood.
There’s no stain on that, just the natural unfinished walnut. It needs a quick hit with the pole sander to get rid of any fingerprints, and then a couple of coats of satin poly. And then I’m going to curl up and live in this room for the next, oh, year or two.
The doors won’t be here for another couple of weeks, and here’s what our project list looks like before we make the big move:
- Install bedroom floor & trim
- Install closet shelving
- Finish full bath vanity
- Grout full bath tile
- Install master shower/bath tile
- Install master bath floor
- Build master vanity
- Install doors
- Build shelf for temporary kitchen in laundry room, or install kitchen cabs
The flooring alone is worth at least 4 days with both of us dedicated to it, so you can see why taking a little time off work in the next month is going to be key.
But still… we’re so close to the finish line I can taste it. Or is that sawdust in my mouth?

I think it’s probably both, but the sawdust has most likely beed dipped in BBQ sauce making it endlessly more tasty 🙂
*sigh* Those floors are gorgeous! You’ll have to update us with how they hold up overtime.
And why the heck do you need a door to get a permit? Seems super crazy to me. What about those modern homes with no doors between the master bed/bath?
You don’t need a door between the master bed/bath specifically, you just need one bathroom with a door. I guess it’s really a personal choice but I’m guessing it has to do with landlords, etc. You cant put a toilet in the corner of a room and rent it out, or something.
I’m with Robin. What is their logic for requiring a door? To keep kids out? How do those modern homes get away without doors? Goofy. 🙂
You’ve done a phenomenal job! Have never seen walnut floors and they are incredible (add to dream list). Guess you have to have a door between the throneroom and public area to contain the scents of royalty!

OMG, those floors are gorgeous! Yeah, I’d move into your closet. And April will hopefully have better moving weather for you. Moving in snow, even if it’s just across the yard, sounds like no fun.
