Rustic Wood Wall Art: Part 2

See this? This is me making a concerted effort to actually finish one of the projects I started in the last couple of weeks. Stranger things have happened.

I’m actually also anxious to see this rustic wall art hanging on a wall somewhere (see how I built the panels here) which means I have to do something with it besides let it lean up against the office wall. So I laid it on the office floor instead!

This was a good idea because 1.) if I stub my toe on it everyday it will remind me to get it done, and 2.) it allowed me to get a good “top down” shot I could use to photoshop some potential design ideas onto the panels.

For example, orchids:

I didn’t exactly love them so I tried a couple of other things. Since I’m looking for something black and white without too much depth, I thought a bridge might work nicely. This one was photoshopped from a picture…

And this one from a line drawing:

I also played around with a skyline (Chicago, since it’s my favorite big city), also in picture format:

chicago_mockup

And then as a silhouette:

The colors/contrast of the mockups aren’t necessarily correct since I was just trying to get everything to a place where I could see what it might look like.

What do you think? (I have a favorite, but I could be persuaded to change my mind.)

  1. I like the orchid as that kind of softening contrast with the rustic distressed wood. As a close second, I’m a fan of the Chicago skyline in picture form – never been a big silhouette fan. Reminds me of those high school play backdrops.

  2. I agree with Nicole about the orchids; the contrast between gentle and rough is pretty, but if you don’t dig it I really like the first bridge or the non-silhouette skyline. Right on, cool project.

  3. I’m diggin the Chitown skyline. I’m thinking about doing the same but I’m using this piece as my inspiration..I’m a sucker for old maps.

Look forward to your finished project

    1. I like that one… and actually thought about doing a different map, but I couldn’t find one that worked as well. I’d love to see pics of yours when its done!

  4. All of your choices look beautiful. I guess it would depend on where you are going to use it. I can’t remember if you said. For your office area, I like the first bridge the best, however, for a bedroom area, I like the orchids best. 🙂 Can’t wait to see your finished piece!

  5. Ohhhhhh … love the first bridge but yes, it really depends on where your artwork will go. How are you going to transfer the picture?

  6. The first bridge photo would be my choice — very architectural. As much as I like the skyline ones, I think I would tire of those more quickly.

  7. I love the first bridge (the perspective is really neat – it sucks you in instead of letting you stand back and view it statically). That said, does that bridge hold special meaning for you? It seems the second one does (unless the writing on the panels was not yours). That may make a difference for you. I don’t particularly like the orchids – too flat(they look a little like a puffy cartoon clouds at first glance), although another flower photo/view could work. Looking forward to seeing your pick.

  8. My favorite would have to be the last Chicago one but without it saying Chicago. Sorry, I deviated from the options 🙂 A close second is the first bridge.

  9. I like the first bridge one. Second choice is the first skyline.

On a side note Chicago is really your favorite city? No offense but we can’t stand it. To be fair we can’t stand big cities in general. The traffic, the crowds, and the expensive…well everything.

  10. First bridge! Has a lot of movement while still being calming. And the significance of a bridge to…whatever…would be inspiring on a day to day basis.

  11. Definitely the second one, with the silhouette of the bridge. That’s just stunning. The orchid I’d like better as a poster, or done on watercolor paper, I think.

Also, totally random: Chicago is one my favoritest places ever!

  12. I agree with some other comments that the roughness of the wood and the softness of the orchids is a really nice contrast. I also just love flower art everything, but I think my point is valid although completely bias. My second choice is the 1st bridge 🙂 great ideas! I have some let over wood from building a deck and I think I am going to give this a try! Thanks for the post!

  13. I am with the minority here. I think the orchids, which wouldn’t be my natural inclination, look best on the wood. Soft lines verses hard and so on. the bridges, which would usually be more to my taste are more of the same kind of lines, and leave me a bit cold, I’m afraid.

  16. I have a feeling you don’t need advice on this one. You have great vision.

Can’t wait to see the finished work.
