Outbuildings

If you’re wondering what would compel a girl to rent a house with hot pink plastic tiles covering the bathroom (don’t worry, you’ll get to see it in all of its glory soon enough) and two acres of grass to mow come spring, well…

An old barn doesn’t hurt.

Or a silo. And a falling-down garage.

You know, places where you can risk a broken leg and a serious case of tetanus while you treasure hunt…

Plus it comes with a guest-house. (If you’re a chicken.)

So basically my decision on where to live for the next six months– which happens to be twenty miles away from anyone I know and my job– was based entirely on ancient outbuildings.

Yep. Still crazy.

  1. One of my friends just moved into an apartment in a repurposed silo. Not to give you any ideas or anything….

  2. Did you take those pics with a filter? Or what did you do in Photoshop to get the effect? It’s awesome.

    1. I use multiple actions on them, plus a little additional editing. I like “Old School” from the Itty Bitty Action set, plus playing with the color saturation and lighting effects!

  3. I bought not 1 but 2 farms based on the old post and beam barns. In both cases the the houses were crap but I FELL IN LOVE with the buildings!!! How do you fall in love with barns? Very easy!

You need some chickens for you chicken coop!

  4. Love the silo! You’ve either got great vision or you’re nuts! My vote is for great vision!

  5. You can’t say you don’t love a challenge!

On a completely different note, have you ever sent in a tape or thought about trying to get on HGTV? Because I think you’d be awesome. You’re a good lookin’ lady with mad skills and you’re damn funny too (if your blog is any indication). At the very least you should absolutely apply to be on the next season of Great American Handyman, but you should definitely have some kind of show of your own. I think you should pitch them a show in which you teach women how to do stuff themselves, like, you know, build a house.

    1. What I’ve come to find out is I’m less funny and more scary-throwing-tools lady in the moment. I don’t know that TV is for me, but you’ll get a little sample of my on-camera persona soon!
