Welcome To The Neighborhood

Well, it’s finally officially official… the last lingering bit of paperwork has been cleared up, and The Liberty House is home. Even though I’m not quite sleeping here yet, it’s now my permanent address and the place where I’m staying up on my computer until all hours in the night, refusing to get my beauty rest.

This week I started slowly moving car-loads of boxes up here (boxes it seems like  moved out of Memorial yesterday) just to give me an excuse to sit on the patio and linger over the sunset. Work has also officially started on the house… I’m happy to announce I’ve got running water, a repaired hot water heater, and am thisclose to having working heat.  I also expect to have a new roof on by the end of the week, which means I’ll be able to check one big item off this list.

Meanwhile, I’ve been working on some miscellaneous projects like getting all of the doors and faucets working, and prepping for The Great Sawdust Party of 2012, also known as refinishing all of this hardwood.

It’s not that they look bad, it’s that I don’t personally like the color or the degree of shiny, and if I’m going to sand them down ever, I’m going to do it now. More than one of you asked why I didn’t just have them refinished before I moved in, and I seriously considered it. Right up until I saw the price tag of around $1500 just to sand them down. Ha. Ha. No. I’ll rent the sander for $45/day and spend the weekend covered in sawdust, thanks. It wouldn’t be the first time. Or even the second.

I’ve also been spending a few of my evenings meeting the locals. The Liberty House is located in a small town outside of a slightly larger town outside of a college town, and the truth is that– let me be frank– small towns scare the shit out of me. Having people up in my business kind of nerves me out, which is weird, right? Because here I am posting my business all over the internet. Well, what can I say, I’m a woman of contradictions. So, I was prepared for a little “who’s this crazy girl with the bigass dumpster in her yard” from the neighbors. But instead I got “hey, wanna borrow my tractor?” and hugs.

Turns out not only are my neighbors awesome, but they have two of these in their pole barn:

Yeah. So basically should the Mayans come through with an apocalypse this year… I’m covered.

They’re really fabulous people and it turns out none of their five big St. Bernards actually want to tear my arm off and eat it for dinner. (I wasn’t sure there for a minute, but I guess that’s what I get for skulking around the house after dark.)

I also learned that you can find the local chicken farmer at the hole-in-the-wall bar just down the street every Thursday selling fresh eggs for $2/dozen.

So basically I’m in small-town heaven right now.

The next week is going to be just a little crazy with all of the work going on and a rapidly approaching move-in date, so while my posts may be a little scattered for a bit, two things are for sure: I ended up in the right place, and the adventure is in full-swing!

  1. Wow you’ve got some big stuff coming up quick! If you need any help with anything random, let me know! 🙂 🙂

    1. My goal with this house is never to turn down help when it’s offered, so I might take you up on that!

  2. I am wanting to see more? I am excited to see what you got going on! I know what you mean about small towns. So I just live in the boonies…then I don’t have to deal with small or big towns. Ha!

  3. I am in for Sunday work this week. But only if I get to meet the Saint Bernards! 🙂

  4. We’ve gone from buying a dozen eggs per week, to three dozen. That’s 36 eggs. I dont know what happened. Neither I nor my wife nor my 16 month old son took up serious weight training anytime recently. 2 dollar fresh and local grown dozens sound amazing, especially when it’s costing me at least four bucks a dozen at this point.

Moving sucks. No two ways about that. Good luck. Looking forward to hearing more.

  5. Don’t be scared small towns are the best! OMG your neighbor has not one but two “ducks?” Do you have any ponds nearby to try them out in? Have you seen that new show “Doomsday Preppers” because you should kick up your feet and watch an episode. Bonus points if you do it with alcohol. The show becomes much more hilarious then.

We have two people that sell eggs near us. One is three houses up from us and the husband works with FM. He just has to bring in an empty cartoon in exchange for a new one (the guy brings fresh eggs everyday and stores them in a mini fridge under his desk). How convenient is that?

  6. I can not believe how fast all of this is going! Wahhooooo! Awesomeness moves at the speed of light.

    1. Ah, Julie… they used to breed, but I don’t think they do anymore. They really are big nice dogs, but I can’t imagine having 5 of them in my house…lol.

    1. I’m hoping to have donkeys on the property this summer. There’s a huge debris pile in the pasture and I need to do some work on the barn and fence everything in first.

  7. I grew up in a village with a relative on every street and the other streets were covered by friends’ parents – that was good and bad depending on what I wanted to do at any given age!

Glad to hear the St. Bernards didn’t want to rip you apart since they can be very protective if not socialized well and you definitely won’t have to worry about zombies with those land/sea vehicles!

On another note, I finally bought my sliding compound miter saw…and trim… and baseboard! Thanks to you, Ana White in AK and Sarah the Thrifty Decor Chick in IN, my inner DIY Maven has been unleashed and now to finish off the 3rd bedroom! Many thanks for all the encouragement you bring! My new saying? “DIY Maven…No Plan B” (I think the USMC used it first though.)

  8. I didn’t realize the Mayan apocalypse was going to be water-based. Glad your nice new neighbors have you covered! All the best as you embark on your excellent adventure!

  9. Oh Kit I envy your adventure…wished I lived close by…I’d be able to be your devoted factotum and really learn some serious skills from you! Have a blast it’s going to be awesome and that t-shirt would be cool.

  10. Neighbors can be the greatest or worst – if they offer you a tractor, they’re totally keepers.

  11. What excitement. can hardly wait to see it all, if I live through this 2nd move. Mamie

  12. Hey – happened to type in diydiva.com on accident (which I’ve done before and been irritated that it was some sales site and not you!) but it looks like whomever owned that domain has dropped it? Dunno if it’s back up for sale, but thought I’d mention it in case you were interested.

So, so, so glad you got the house. The land is stunning, the house has potential galore, and you are going to have so much fun!!!
