Barn Siding Adventures: Lost & Found

Lost, somewhere in the barn loft: Sanity.

Found, somewhere in the barn loft:

One potentially fabulous chair…

Ten clearly fabulous and almost completely intact metal frame windows…

(It’s possible I threw my hands up in the universal “touchdown” signal and then hugged one of these when I found them.)

Oh, and I finished off the framing while I was up there treasure hunting.

I’ve got an hour drive home from my day job so by the time I get back and set up, I’m really only working with about an hour and a half of daylight, which in this case translates to about 12 trips up to the loft and 6 new studs. (Those angles are a bitch.)

My goal for Wednesday is to put up two pieces of sheathing by myself without requiring a trip to the emergency room.

Hey, aim high, right?

  1. As soon as I saw the picture of those windows, I immediately thought, “green house!” without scrolling any further down. Definate score!

  2. That chair is beautiful – hope it can be fixed. My sister has several odd chair that she uses as extra seating in various rooms. Since most people want sets of chairs for a dining room table the odd chairs can usually be purchased for very little money. Hers aren’t such pretty wood so she paints them a fun color and upholsters the seat.

Do the windows fit any of the windows in the house? The green on them looks like it matches the forest green you’ve been eradicating! I’m thinking someone stored the storm windows in the barn/garage and then they were forgotten.

    Be careful with that sheathing!

  3. I too like to set goals in my restoration / preservation projects. The problem is, my goals are often unrealistic and and the end of the day I am often disappointed with my progress – which always takes longer than I anticipate. I love your dedication! You motivate me! Keep your chin up!

  4. Love that chair and those windows are a great start to (another) outbuilding! Can you rig a pulley system for the sheathing?

  5. Oh man! I’m so jealous of your treasure finds! Around here, we get to discover things like odd pieces of carpet in a field or rusted oil drums or brittle PVC pipe. Yay.

  6. Wow! That’s going to be quite a project, but I’m sure it will look lovely when you finish! Be careful and best of luck. Nice chair too! 😉

  7. Somebody put a lot of love into building that chair. The book matched veneer in the main back panel is terrific. And is that inlay or marquetry at the sides?
