Nailed It: Update

It’s been, I don’t know, a couple of months since I showed you a sneak peek at the project I was working on to hang above the doors to my office.

Yesterday, while I was trying to dig myself out of a good 8″ of snow blanketing the farm, a few of you asked how that project was going. I figured I’d give you a quick update, since there’s nothing exciting about me telling you how I spent an hour last night breaking ice off of 1000 linear feet of electric fence wire. (Farm chores, the excitement never ends.)

So, here’s where I’m at with my crazy idea to pound thousands of little nails into an old wood board…

The relief actually makes it very clear in person, but the contrast doesn’t show up as well in pictures. (3D art is hard to share in 2D… shocking.) Here’s a closer look:

This is a little more true to what you see when you’re actually in the room. It is also the result of watching all three Crocodile Dundee movies (yes, there are three), Captain America, and the Avengers.

Yeah, so that’s about 8 hours worth of work, and only about half done.

However, I love the way that it looks. Love. It’s the exact thing that I wanted above the door… and since I hung it up there a few weeks ago to get it out of the way when I had some friends over for dinner, I haven’t been motivated to take it down and start working on it again.

This was never going to be a “finish it in a weekend” kind of project, but something I planned to take out every now and again to work on. But you never know, I might buy the first 3 seasons of 24 and have a Jack Bauer/nailing marathon one of these weekends.

  1. I LOVE your blog and am always inspired by you! In fact your previous post about this project actually inspired me to do a similar nail and barn board project for my parents. It turned out great and they really loved it. Your Crocodile Dundee comment made me laugh because I personally watched 11 hours of MacGuyver while nailing all my nails! What is it about nail craft projects that makes you want to watch awesome 80s stuff?

Anyways, keep up the great work! You’re an inspiration to us all!

  2. Personally, I’d watch the entire Star Trek series again. Original, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager…yeah baby, I totally let my inner geek out, didn’t I? 🙂

    1. Funny story… I have a friend who has offered to give me all of the TNG seasons, which would be my first choice while working on this! I need to call him…

      1. Kit,

Not sure if you’re a Netflix subscriber, but you can stream all of the ST:TNG episodes.

I hope you’re a Netflix subscriber…. because otherwise I’d have to assume that you _own_ all three Crocodile Dundee movies…

Ah, I just noticed your later note…. ST:TNG is available via “old-school” dvd delivery as well. 🙂

      2. And since later posts are recommending series to watch, here are a couple of my favorites.

Firefly (sad that it’s only one season)
        The West Wing
+1 for the mention of BSG

    1. Oh, I wish! I actually don’t get high-speed internet out in the middle of nowhere. I’ve got a 3G wi-fi hotspot, but I’m limited to 5 GB per month (which means once I’m done uploading all my images for the blog, I maybe can watch one movie (highly buffered) per month). I have to go old-school and get actual DVDs.

  3. Maybe I’m getting all weirdly metaphorical here, but I love the approach to this project as it relates to life. All of us are a bit weathered and rusty in this life, but with attention, it can be a work of beauty that’s truly worth the effort. You don’t have to work hard at it in a rush to be finished, and the process can be as much or more rewarding as the completion.

Oh, and I’d recommend Buffy the Vampire Slayer (series) or Battlestar Galactica for power watching!

    1. I love the metaphor!

I also love Battlestar Galactica (I think I watched all the seasons in one fell swoop a few years ago), it might be time for a re-watch, but I’ve actually never seen Buffy… so that might be an awesome one to check out too.

  4. I’ve been following your blog for awhile now and have this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to comment!

I’ll send you seasons 1-4 of 24 if you want them. I will never watch then again and they are only taking up space in my closet. I’m willing to contribute if it makes your nailing sessions more bearable!

    Keep up the nice work.

  5. I love this project too. I might try something like this myself. Personally I’d watch all the seasons of Lost or Revenge. 🙂

  6. I stumbled across your blog and wow it’s like a sister I didn’t know I had! awesome work and LOVE this idea!

  7. Another Battle Star vote from me! I’d totally be willing to lend them by mail!

Also: Fringe. we’ve been devouring those seasons lately and it’s totally available old-school hard copies from Netflix. 🙂

    Looking great!
