Reasons I May Never Leave The Farm Again

I used to be a bit of a wanderer. Weekends away, planning vacations, considering my next big trip. Which is ironic because right now just the idea of spending twenty-four hours away from the farm requires me to lay prostrate on the ground and breathe deeply so I don’t have a panic attack.

And so would you, if you had to contend with chickens that might, at any point in time, stage a revolt, steal your beer, and take over the internet…

Plus, the cat would have no one to lay around in the grass and be awesome with…

Because clearly sprawling out on a blanket in the middle of the pasture, reading a book, is integral to things running smoothly around here…

And I’m not sure the beans would grow quite as tall without me singing to them every day…

I’ve been all over the world and back, and I can tell you this, nothing beats breakfast out on the picnic table. Or the company.

I lived in Hawai’i for a year, and Florida for two. I’ve been to Australia, and Italy, and China. My first easy-to-maintain house in the city meant long weekends in Vegas, Jamaica, the Bahamas. I’ve dived at reefs in the Turks & Caicos and Caymans.  And that’s nice.

I’m glad I’ve been to enough places and seen enough things to know that my heart is right here.

  1. Love that first photo – it reminds me of the ‘kids’ show ‘Pinky & the Brain’…

Brain: We must prepare for tomorrow night.
Pinky: Why? What are we going to do tomorrow night?
Brain: The same thing we do every night, Pinky – try to take over the world!!

And you are spot on – home is where the heart is :o)

    Cheers, Col

  2. You know you’ve grown up when you’d rather be home than running around like a lunatic looking to be “entertained”.

    Congratulations!

  3. The “Pinky and the Brain” analogy is perfect!
So what book are you reading? I’m looking for a good one.

    1. I too wondered what the book is, I looked at the original photo to see if I could figure it out. All I got was that I don’t think I have read it and I don’t know what it is. I miss the list of books on the side bar. I like book suggestions, not that I don’t have a whole pile of them sitting my by bed that I am working my way through. Also nice large aperture photo, with narrow depth of field, I miss having time to play with my camera.

  4. It’s pretty big of your chickens to not mind hanging out with you while you’re eating their potential future offspring!

  5. I just bought a hammock on a nice folding frame (so it can get stashed when I need to mow) for taking naps in the sun in my pasture! My favorite thing to do when I need a break in the afternoons on the farm!

And yes, leaving for any amount of time requires lots of logistical coordination with my wonderful neighbor who takes care of everything from feeding donkeys to whatever other farm chore needs to be done. So thankful to have her!

      1. I once had a hammock and I was really suprised at how often I used it. I figured that it was a good idea but I would never actually lay in it, but any time I had any free time I took a book and headed out to the hammock!

  6. I was thinking of you this morning as I tried to figure out whether I could eat breakfast outside (mosquitoes aside, I also don’t have a porch or a decent table). Glad to see you’re still doing that. What a great way to start the day. When people ask us where we’re going for our summer vacation, I explain that I’m quite happy to spend my time at home on the farm. Enjoy your sanctuary!
