Bathroom Makeover Therapy: Feeling Better Already

If we’re going to be honest here, the mini-makeover on the downstairs bathroom was a project born more out of desperation than inspiration. Sometimes that happens. Just like sometimes you decide to put “a quick second coat” of paint on something after you’ve already showered and then end up going in to work with paint in your hair the next day… Um. Anyway. Questionable decisions regarding paint and which projects you should tackle don’t negate actual progress, which is the point of this post.

I was desperate to see some sort of progress around the house, and to complete a project that wasn’t going to require hiring subs or big structural questions or an infinite number of hours that I don’t currently have. So I started a project that I didn’t actually need to do…

Over the last week, I painted.

I rewired some things.

I patched some drywall, swapped out some door hardware, and here we are…

Even better (worse?) before shot:

Hello, gorgeous:

It’s not quite done yet. I’ve got a new shower curtain coming sometime in the next couple of weeks. I’m planning to stain the grout on the floor tiles white. (Honestly, the floor doesn’t look great with the new colors, but it’s all getting ripped out to make way for a brick veneer floor when I redo the kitchen, so I’m not too worried about it.)

Even thought this mini-makeover is not quite finished, it has totally worked its magic and reminded me that not every project it a struggle. It’s funny how checking something off your list– and a little paint in your hair– can give you the energy for the next big project. Which means that sound you hear? That’s probably me ripping carpet up in my Master bedroom…

On to the next one.

  1. Sometimes it’s the big things….sometimes it’s the little things….that get yer ass in gear! It looks nice; refreshing, both literally and figuratively.

  2. Which products are you looking into for staining your grout? We have an odd color in our bathroom as well, and the tiles seem to be the same as yours. Any suggestions?

  3. Funny how much a difference some small changes can make, and how a little success can give you that energy boost you need to tackle something bigger. I do recognize the feeling.

About the grout, definitely check Mary Ellen’s link, it also came to my mind as soon as I read you’re planning to tackle the grout (only to see someone already beat me to it, argh!) 😉

Have fun with the carpet, it’s something we already did for all bedrooms, and very glad it’s gone (all that dust and dirt, yuck). There’s a post about it on our blog (http://www.townhousehome.com/look-underneath-carpet/) and the next one how we tackled the glue remnants, you can check them out if you feel like it. I do hope you’ll have less glue to tackle, that was a real pain-in-the-*ss!

  4. How do you like the World Market cabinet? I’m thinking of getting the smaller one for my bathroom.

  5. I’ve followed for quite some time but never commented. So hey, what’s up, I promise I’m not a stalker or anything. I just have to say this looks awesome! and I know what you mean about needing progress. I really think the tile will look more in sync with the room once you stain it white. Can’t wait to see it!

  6. Quick question, if that light is from Lowe’s. If it isn’t, um, well, hi, your hair looks great today! Is that the 10ish” or the 13ish”? I’m considering a pair over my double vanity, but waffling on the size. Thanks kindly!

  7. I was actually looking to use that same light in a bathroom. Does it seem to light the room sufficiently when compared the 3-light sconce? (Given, all rooms are different, but I still value your judgement.)

    1. Yeah, I think so. But I also have overhead lighing in that bathroom if I need it. I primarily use the fixture though, and it works great.
